MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Soccer team (0-3) took on its first nationally-ranked opponent of the season Friday, hosting No. 14 Lincoln Memorial University (3-0) in a 3-2 loss for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats struck first, as junior Cassie Balzano (Douglasville) scored GC's first goal of the season in the 21st minute, as classmate Kia Jie Jacobs (Atlanta) dropped a pass off to her on the left side from the top of the box. Balzano blasted home her 10th career goal in the process.
The equalizer came just before halftime, when Jessica Cravero netted her fourth of the year a misplay by the Bobcat defense helped her slip by the back line in the 39th minute. Iztel Ballesteros gathered a loose ball and scored in the 79th minute to put LMU up for the first time.
Cravero's second goal of the match was a beauty. Gathering a high-bouncing pass from Thenia Zervas, Cravero made good on a bicycle-kick attempt to ignite her bench.
With just under a minute left, the Bobcats drew a foul in the box, setting up Alyssa Bergamini (West Suffield, Connecticut) for her first goal of the season, and the 3-2 final.
Freshman Kate Richardson (Marietta) made six saves in nine tries in the loss.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday, Sept. 15 at 3 p.m., facing Embry-Riddle University.
